The summer is 1/2 over, and I have come to a stand still on my training. I have two young ones that I have started driveing, even had the one hitched, but that was a over a week ago! Its tough to find the time and energy to do it. Not to mention the help. It really takes two to start driveing. I was hoping to do some showing this summer too, but that has fallen though I think I just need to have some fun. Maybe today I will get out my tried and true driving pony. No worries with her, just go!

Do you ever lose the enthusiazum(sp)?

i don't have a lack of enthusiam so much as a lack of ability. my boy hasn't been ridden in weeks (not counting riding him in bareback from the pasture). i'm allergic to sunlight, so i have to wear long sleeves or my arms will break out in horribly prickly-itchy hives, and i'm very susceptible to heat exhaustion/heatstroke. without a shaded place to ride, i haven't been able to get into the saddle for fear of passing out mid-ride.

My enthusiasm goes down dramatically when it's so hot that I can't ride (since my arena is right out in the blazing sun). When the sun goes down, the bugs get bad, but I try and get them out anyway. Generally get out on my 4 year old 3-4 times a week, and my 3 y.o. either lunged or drove at least once or twice. I can't wait till the first hard freeze!

I'm enthusiastic most of the time, it's motivation that I lack. Just like Blue Lace, when it gets hot, I'm spent. I have a hard time functioning in hot weather, add humidity and I'm better left in bed! I often tell friends that if horses could be trained by mere thought alone, my horses would be national level competitors by now! LOL Unfortunately, I know what it's like to be flying solo and how that can put a damper on things. I had several people stand up with anticipation to come work horses with me this year as things were thawing out, but I've yet to see any of them. It's just been one of those years I guess.

Hot? The evenings have been great for riding and working hard! We did our 10+ mile loop last night in 1 hour 12 minutes. The horses were sweaty but not blowing hard.

Buck up guys! Season of frozen toes and fingers will be here before you know it!

I have the same problem... It's not that I like the desire, but I'm really bad at making the time. I was looking forward to more riding this summer and I've done less than last summer. I have a full time job, a two year old son, and a less than horse enthusiastic fiance....makes it tough to get riding time on two horses.

Missie...that is what is bad about my lovely job! I'm going to work right when the perfect riding weather is. I do ride between 5:00-6:00 though. Not as bad then. And yes, I am all too well aware of the approaching winter! grrrr!!!!

I'd say we're warming up for the best riding times. Average horses are somewhat used/trained by then.
Spring is when they act ditzy. Summer heat takes away enthuasium for much exercise. I treasure cool and cloudy fall.

In my case, it was slowing down my life in order to make summer last longer. I as out of town every weekend during May, June & July. I've been home now every weekend and finally feel like I'm getting a summer. I think we run ourselves so ragged that we lose perspective of the things we used to enjoy and think of as fun. Going out to ride now is a blast, I have no purpose except to ride.

Maybe you need to get going less?
